Meet Our Team


Many people help make the Hawaii Housing Alliiance possible, including our valued partners, but Charles Wathen is and executive director and Nani Medeiros is the day-to-day managing director. Learn more about them below!

 

Executive Directors




Mr. Wathen is the president of Wathen & Associates Limited, a Honolulu and Denver based consulting and development firm. The firm has provided services of expertise in acquisition, development planning, property management and market analysis since 1971. From 1968 through 1971 he was an appraiser with the Otis Company in Omaha Nebraska. Mr. Wathen's experience encompasses over 45 states and a real estate portfolio well in excess of two billion dollars.

In addition, Mr. Wathen has been an owner and developer of a variety of real estate properties since 1980. From 1974 until 1986, Mr. Wathen performed consulting services on over 20,000 low and moderate income units nationwide. Three of the properties he has developed have received awards, two of which were local awards and one received a Management Innovation Award for "Creative Capital Financing" from the International City Management Association. Also, Mr. Wathen is the CEO of Pier Management - Hawaii LLC, which was formed in 2000, and managed over 2,500 mixed income apartment units of which over 1000 units were affordable unit.

Mr. Wathen is an avid Affordable Housing Advocate and has served on the Governor Affordable Housing Task Force, the Governor's Affordable Housing Regulatory Barriers Task Force, the Mayor of Honolulu's Advisory Committee, and the Mayor of Honolulu's Affordable Housing Advisory Group, in addition to several other committees. He organizes the affordable/workforce housing conferences and initiatives for the Urban Land Institute in Hawaii. Mr. Wathen is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Hawaii Housing Finance and Development Corporation. He is a member of the Urban Land Institute and Lambda Alpha International, a founding member of Hawaii Housing Alliance, and a real estate broker.

 

 





Ms. Medeiros
grew up in Kaimuki and Mililani on the island of Oahu. She graduated from Iolani School and attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Hawaii Pacific University. Ms. Medeiros has over fourteen years experience in policy development and legislative affairs.

She has worked at the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, Hawaii State House of Representatives, Hawaii State Senate, Office of the Lieutenant Governor - Mazie Hirono, and most recently from 2003 - 2008 at the Office of the Governor - Linda Lingle, as her Deputy Policy Advisor, where she assisted the Administration in developing housing and homelessness policy. Ms. Medeiros served on the Governor's Affordable Housing Task Force where she served as Chair for the Streamlining State and County Land Use Entitlement Committee.

She was a member of the National Governor's Association Policy Academy for Coordinating Housing and Economic Development Policy, clerked for the Housing Committee of the Governor's Economic Momentum Commission, is a founding member of Housing Hawaii, member of the Leadership Committee of Housing Hawaii, and currently serves as the Public Affairs and Advocacy Director at the Hawaii Primary Care Associatio
